high frequency words

High frequency or sight words are words commonly seen in reading and used in writing and are difficult to sound out. Instead, these words need to be memorized by reading and writing them many times. Words such as see, my, like are high frequency words.
Children are expected to learn about 25 high frequency words in kindergarten and 100 by the end of first grade. You can help your child acquire a strong high frequency word vocabulary by pointing out these words when you see them in the books that you read to your child and then discussing the letters in the word: “What are the letters in this word?” “How many letters are in this word?” and “What is the first letter in this word?” are great questions to ask your child about these words when you notice them.
